This course is ideal for anyone who has limited or no understanding maps and hasn't really ever used a compass to navigate. It can act as a refresher also if you are a bit nervous of your own skill ability or need to brush up.
This is a very hands-on course with time spent out on the fells learning and using the skills.
You can expect to cover the following on the day:
-
Learning about the map - map symbols, scales and grid references
-
Pacing - what it is and how to do it
-
Tick features - finding, recognising and understanding the need for them
-
Naismith's rule - timing of your routes and how to work it out
-
Compass bearings - how to take and follow a bearing
-
Leapfrogging
-
Planning your own route for future
Improvers Navigation
If the Beginner Navigation course already covers the skills you have to a certain degree or you have already attended, then this improvers course is the one for you. We will spend a short time st the start of the day refreshing skills. The day will be based in a more complex area of terrain where less obvious features such as paths, tracks and walls can be used to navigate by. Real mountain terrain. This allows us to teach you the ability to move across open ground using various techniques as well as interpreting the contours.
The whole day is spent out on the fell, lasting about 6-7 hours. During the day you can expect to cover:
Quick refresh on skills
Leave the security of footpaths to move across open ground confidently
Take and walk on bearings whilst timing and pacing over rough ground - up, down and across
A look at pacing variations on different terrain
New techniques - boxing round and re-sections
Navigation on different map scales
Contour recognition
Advanced Navigation
Advanced navigation courses are on a one-to-one basis for those who want to perhaps start working towards their Mountain Leader Award of other Mountain Training courses, join a Mountain Rescue Team or just be as brilliant as possible at all things map and compass geeky.
These are bespoke days tailored specifically to your personal requirements.
Looking at micro navigation learning the ability to find very small contour features, re-locate yourself and get your timings perfect, this course will build on all the skills from the above courses and make you a better, more confident navigational pro.

Night Navigation
Having the confidence to navigate at night opens up the spectrum of what you can do in the hills regardless of the time of day or year. Don't let those shorter days hold you back.
Whether you simply want to catch those dramatic sunrises and sunsets or set off on a big mountain day knowing you don't have enough daylight, being able to navigate at night will make the experience a whole lot more enjoyable.
If you already have some basic navigation skills then this course will be a great next step for you in order to push yourself to the next level.
Night navigation is also a great way to gain more confidence in poor daytime conditions. If you can navigate well at night, the chances are you can do the same in good old mist, fog and drizzle! We get enough of it...
